Review Updates The Victim Etc…Part 1

Hi everyone. Just wanted to say Thanks for getting me over 10,000 hits on the site. You might have noticed I haven’t had a new post in awhile. The reasons vary from one being very sick (still am) to other things coming up in my life that has been stressful the past couple years. Another issue I’ve been having is Blu-ray player problems which I solved recently by getting a quality new one (knock on wood) at a cheap price. Also I have this annoying scratch on my Dell XPS Laptop that doesn’t allow me to see much of anything in my lower right hand of the screen (and I need my laptop for Blu-ray 3D reviews).  Hopefully people can make purchases if they are interested in the product through my links to Amazon which will get me some kickback to help either repair or replace my laptop so I can get back to doing what I love which is providing you all with movie reviews and other reviews on entertainment topics.

Here are some current review movies I have recieved and am in the process of watching/reviewing. –

The Victim

Annie’s life is in jeopardy after she witnesses the horrific murder of her closest friend. Fleeing from two attackers she stumbles across Kyle, a recluse living in the middle of the woods. Two worlds collide in this grindhouse psychological thriller that will make you question your trust in mankind.  Written, directed and starring Michael Biehn (The Terminator, Aliens, Grindhouse:  Planet Terror, The Divide.)  Also starring Jennifer Blanc (Hatchet III), Danielle Harris (Halloween 4:  The Return of Michael Myers) and Tanya Newbould (X-Men:  The Last Stand.)

Genres: Horror, Thriller
Cast: Jennifer Blanc, Tanya Newbould, Michael Biehn, Danielle Harris

Mini Review – Watched this in it’s entirety twice last night once for the movie itself and the 2nd time for the commentary by Michael and Jennifer Biehn. Amazing work here. Michael has crafted a fun story and brought it to life in his Directorial debut. The real-life couple has amazing chemistry onscreen (also see The Divide for more from the pair) which is a rarity for real couples (see  Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez in Gili). I highly recommend this movie if you love horror, mystery, drama, action and suspense. Not for those who have an issue with nudity, sex or violence. I’m hoping for a sequel. Stay tuned for my full review on Movie-Vault.com and a partial excerpt of that here. You can pre-order The Victim on Blu-ray (release date – 9/18/12) by clicking the picture link (and showing much appreciated support for my reviews) and The Divide on Blu-ray by clicking my word link earlier in this post. DVD orders of both titles will be posted in picture links below.

After Dark Horrorfest BD Review Movies

Hello, this entire post is about the four volume collection of After Dark Horrorfest films debuting on Blu-ray from Lionsgate.

Lionsgate –

After Dark Horrorfest Blu-ray Double-Feature : Volume 1  –

Buy Grave Dancers Wicked Little Things BD @ Amazon.comThe Gravedancers – After a drunken night of dancing on graves, a group of friends are haunted by three havoc-minded ghosts bent on revenge.

Special Features –

  • Commentary with Director Mike Mendez and Composer Joseph Bishara
  • “A Grave Undertaking” Making-of Featurette with Optional Commentary
  • “Making the Ghosts” Making-of Featurette
  • Original Trailer with Optional Commentary
  • Deleted Scenes with Optional Commentary
  • Storyboard Galleries
  • Trailers

Joe’s Thoughts – Interesting idea, though doubtful it has the making for a good film. Haven’t seen it yet so I really can’t judge.

Wicked Little Things – Recently widowed Karen Tunny and her two daughters, Sarah and Emma, move to a remote home which Karen has inherited from the family of her late husband. However, she is unaware that the home is situated near an old mine, the site of an early 20th century tragedy in which many children were buried alive…

Special Features –

Joe’s Thoughts – I’ve seen this before, a good little film that should spook, but not anywhere near great. Notable for actresses Lori Heuring and Scout Taylor-Compton (Rob Zombie’s Halloween)

After Dark Horrorfest Blu-ray Double-Feature : Volume 2 –

Buy Borderland/Crazy Eights BD @ Amazon.com

Borderland Unrated Director’s Cut – On the eve of their graduation, three Texas University students travel to a Mexican border town and fall prey to an ancient cult hell-bent on finding candidates for human sacrifice.

Special Features –

  • Rituales de Sangre – The True Story Behind the Cult Murder Investigation
  • Audio Commentary with Director Zev Berman, Actor Brian Presley, Director of Photography Scott Kevan and Producer Laure Moews
  • Inside Zev’s Head: A Filmmaker’s Diary
  • Miss Horrorfest Contest Webisodes

Joe’s Thoughts – Haven’t seen this yet. Interesting idea. Could be good or really lame.

Crazy Eights – Six people are united for a journey through their long-abandoned childhood home: a home with a terrible secret and a mysterious dead girl who will lead them to their strange fates.

Special Features –

  • Miss Horrorfest Webisodes

Joe’s Thoughts – Nice cast with Dina Meyer, Gabrielle Anwar, Frank Whaley and Traci Lords (yes the former porn star). Sounds like it could be a really good one. Looking forward to seeing this for the first time.

After Dark Horrorfest Blu-ray Double-Feature : Volume 3 –

Buy Broken/Butterfly Effect 2 @ Amazon.comThe Broken – A successful radiologist (Lena Headey) watches her life spiral out of control after she sees the spitting image of herself driving down a London street.

Special Features –

  • Miss Horrorfest Webisodes

Joe’s Thought’s – I saw this before. Like Wicked Little Things this is elevated by the star, namely Lena Headey (Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles, 300). A good mystery-thriller. Interested in seeing this again because it’s been awhile and I don’t remember too much about it.

The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations – When a man with the ability to travel through time intervenes with the past, all hell breaks loose.

Special Features –

Miss Horrorfest Webisodes

Joe’s Thoughts – I thought this film was vastly underrated. It’s my favorite of this bunch (the one’s I have seen so far). In fact, I think the entire Butterfly Effect trilogy was overlooked by many because all three films sport interesting ideas and good-solid stories.  There is a very graphic sex scene in this one so maybe that hurt it somewhat. If you are a fan of mystery-thrillers you should check this one out.

After Dark Horrorfest Blu-ray Double-Feature : Volume 4 –

The Graves – After being lured to a mysterious mining town, two sisters must unleash their most primitive instincts to battle unspeakable horrors – both human and supernatural.

Special Features –

  • Audio Commentary with Brian Pulido
  • Audio Commentary with Francisca Pulido and Adam Goldfine
  • The Graves: Behind the Screams
  • Sound Designing The Graves
  • Plan to Actual
  • Spot the Gnome
  • Auditions
  • “Vampires Don’t Exist” Music Video by Calabrese
  • Producer’s Trailer

Zombies Of Mass Destruction – A conservative island community is under attack – from brain-eating zombies! Now it’s up to a ragtag group of rebels to repeal the hordes of the undead.

Special Features –

The Making of Zombies of Mass Destruction –

Overall I think Lionsgate did a very nice job here. My major complaint is a lack of extras as the volumes went on. I would have really liked to have seen some extras on The Broken and Butterfly Effect 3. Can’t complain too much. I’m just glad these are now on Blu-ray and hope for similar transfers for the other After Dark Horrorfest films.

New Review Movie Arrivals – 1-6-2011 – Buried BD & Nite Tales DVD

Hi got a couple of movies to review.

E One Entertainment –

Buy Nite Tales The Series @ Amazon.comNite Tales: The Series (DVD) – Five original horror tales, one devilish host. Prepare yourself for a whole new “flavor” of horror! Filled with twists and turns and packed with some of today’s hottest stars, Nite Tales is a thrilling, new anthology series that puts an urban twist on terror – all presented by the ultimate “master of scaremonies,” Flavor Flav – the “Time Keeper.”

Bonus Feature:

  • Making Of Featurette

Joe’s Thoughts – Looks interesting with stars like Gary Busey, Tiny Lister and Brigitte Nielsen among others. Not exactly an A list cast, but I’m a horror fan and love anthologies.

Lionsgate –

Buy Buried Blu-ray @ Amazon.comBuried Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu-ray Disc plus DVD) – Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds) is not ready to die. Beaten and buried in a wooden box by Iraqi insurgents who attacked his civilian convoy, Conroy is left with only a cell phone, a lighter and 90 minutes to save his own life. He has only the voice of his kidnapper to help him piece together clues that could lean an elite team of special agents to his location and time is not on his side. Fighting despair, panic and delirium, Conroy focuses on his only link to the outside world – a cell phone with poor reception and a rapidly draining battery – to keep himself alive for himself and his family back home.

Disc One –

  • Blu-ray of Buried

“Unearthing Buried” – making of featurette

Disc Two –

  • Standard Definition DVD of the feature film

Joe’s Thoughts – Looks really good. One of the movies I have been looking forward to. Ryan Reynolds is becoming something approaching an A-list star and with upcoming films like Green Lantern his future looks bright……green. OK, that was tacky, but this film looks good and I’ve always been fascinated by the notion of being buried alive. Better seeing it fake on-screen though.

New Movie Arrival 1-4-2011 Machete BD

Hi, hope you all had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Years. Here are the first arrivals of the new year.

20th Century Fox

Machete (Blu-ray + Digital Copy) – From Director Robert Rodriguez (Grindhouse, Sin City) comes an action-packed, cutting-edge serving of carnage asada…and the sharpest way to see it is on Blu-ray, with killer deleted scenes that deliver more guns, more girls and more Machete action!

Set up, double-crossed and left for dead, Machete (Danny Trejo) is an ass-kicking ex-Federale who lays waste to anything that gets in his path. As he takes on hitmen, vigilantes and a ruthless drug cartel, bullets fly, blades clash and the body count rises. Any way you slice it, vengeance has a new name – Machete.

Disc 1 –

  • Blu-ray
  • Machete in High Definition
  • Audience Reaction Track
  • Exclusive Deleted Scenes

Disc 2 –

  • Digital Copy of Machete

Joe’s Thoughts – If you’ve seen the Machete fake trailer on Grindhouse you know you’re in for an action-packed thrill ride with women, blood and Danny Trejo at his best. This is probably the most-anticipated movie in quite awhile. If you think this is a bad movie, you just don’t get it. It is meant to be bad! Remember the movies from the days of drive-inn’s and Grindhouse theaters? This is supposed to be a throwback to those days. Filled with a stunning cast of who’s-who in Hollywood from De Niro to Alba, Michelle Rodriguez to Jeff Fahey and Steven Seagal to Cheech Marin and Lindsay Lohan all while “introducing” Don Johnson. This should be a film that will make you laugh and wow you with action and beautiful women. I can’t wait to view/review this one!

New Review Movies -12/8/2010

Hi everyone. Sorry it’s been awhile. I’ve been pretty sick (still am) making it hard to do anything that requires concentration (like typing or writing reviews). Here are some movies that came yesterday and today. There is a lot more that came recently and I will try to catch up on some of those when I can.

20th Century Fox –

Click to buy @Amazon.com

The Dolphin Story Of A Dreamer (DVD) – Dive into an enchanting world of undersea adventure, friendship and danger with this delightful animated treasure the whole family will cherish. Daniel Alexander Dolphin is a little dolphin with big dreams, living in a world where dreams are forbidden. Swim along with Daniel and his friends on a magical journey of destiny and discovery as he ventures beyond the safety of his pod and follows his heart into the unknown in search of the true purposes of life. This heartwarming, coming-of-age adventure will make a splash with the young and old alike. Dive in – and dare to dream again!

Joe’s Brief Thoughts – Looks like a good animated or CGI children’s movie. The style is very pleasing to the eye. I wouldn’t be surprised if I end up really liking this.

Vivendi Entertainment –

Click to buy @Amazon.com

Derailed (Blu-ray) – Married man Charles Schine (Clive Owen) meets Lucinda Harris (Jennifer Aniston), a high-powered buisnesswoman, on a commuter train one morning. An innocent conversation leads to an evening drink. Before either one can stop, their aroused passions lead to a sizzling one-night stand. Suddenly a stranger explodes into their world, threatening to expose their secret, and lures them into a terrifying game with more surprises than they saw coming.

Special Features – Deleted Scenes, Making of Derailed, Theatrical Trailer

Joe’s Brief Thoughts – I liked this movie. Probably my favorite Clive Owen and favorite Jennifer Aniston (though I loved Along Came Polly & Bruce Almighty) movie wrapped in one. A nice thriller.

Click to buy @Amazon.com

Harsh Times (Blu-ray) – From the creator of Training Day comes Harsh Times, an explosive ride on the mean streets of south central Los Angeles, featuring powerhouse performances by Christian Bale (Batman Begins), Freddy Rodriguez (TV’s “Six Feet Under”), and Eva Longoria (TV’s “Desperate Housewives”). Bale is “electrifying” and “mesmerizing” (Entertainment Weekly) as a returning Middle East soldier who, unable to get a job with the LAPD, drifts into a life of petty crime, drugs, and violence. In an acclaimed performance, Bale “continues to establish himself as one of the most daring and committed actors of his generation” (Michael Ordona, Los Angeles Times). Says Kyle Smith of the New York Post, “if Martin Scorsese were 30 and a Los Angeleno, he’d be making movies…like this.”

Special Features – Feature Commentary with Writer/Producer/Director David Ayer, Making of Harsh Times, Deleted Scenes

Joe’s Brief Thoughts – Harsh Times was a good movie. Probably Eva Longoria’s best big-screen film thus far. Nice cast and an interesting story. Along with Derailed a really nice release from Vivendi on Blu-ray.

Warner Brothers/New Line Cinema –

Click to buy @Amazon.com

Rush Hour (Blu-ray) – “Ain’t never gonna have no partner.” LAPD Det. James Carter insists. He gets a partner. And since that partner is played by dynamic martial arts legend Jackie Chan and motor-mouthed Carter is played by wisecracking Chris Tucker, Rush Hour zooms along with gleeful chemistry under the dynamic directorial hand of Brett Ratner. The case: rescue the kidnapped daughter of a visiting Hong Kong official. The result: amazing stunts (Chan does his own( and verbal wit (well, Tucker does his own, too!) that delivered a kick to the buddy-cop genre – and gave Chan his long-awaited, mainstream-U.S. breakthrough.

Special Features – Commentary by Director Brett Ratner, Additional Scenes, A Piece of the Action: Behind the Scenes of Rush Hour Featurette Gallery, Brett Ratner’s Short Film Whatever Happened to Mason Reese?, 2 Music Videos: Dru Hill’s How Deep Is Your Love? and Heavy D & the Boyz’s Nuttin’ but Love, Isolated Score with Commentary by Composer Lalo Schifrin, Theatrical Trailer.

Joe’s Brief Thoughts – Rush Hour is one of the best action-comedies to come along since the heydey of 48 Hrs and Beverly Hills Cop movies in the 1980’s. Jackie Chan brings the action and Chris Tucker brings the comedy, though Chan is pretty good in his own right comedy-wise. Everything works here, action, comedy, music, pace and style all work. Nice casting as well with great supporting actors like the late Chris Penn. You have to own this on Blu-ray!

My Top 31 Horror Movies List

I hope you all forgive me for rushing this list, but since I started late and was interrupted by my mom’s heart attack I am going to post the list which I had completed before I started the posts. This is just so everyone can see the complete list pre-Halloween. It might not hold up over time and there is the very real possibility I forgot a movie or something but it’s my list as of now and this is not a definitive list, just my personal preferences. In order from least to greatest here it is

#31 – The Ring

#30 – The Amityville Horror (Original)

#29 – The Last House On The Left (Remake)

After.Life Blu-ray Review

After.Life is the story of a young couple who have a tragic misunderstanding leaving Anna (Christina Ricci – Addams Family)  in the morgue. But the funeral director Eliot (Liam NeesonBatman Begins, Schindler’s List) is a bit creepy. Is Anna really dead or is there more to it than meets the eye? Does Eliot have the gift to speak to the dead or is he burying people alive? This movie is a bit spooky and worth seeing. I’d at least give it a rental. Warning for you parents out there that there is nudity (Ricci) throughout the film.

#24 – Seven

Reasons Why – Se7en? The gritty reality of it all. This could happen. Kevin Spacey rocked in this film, but so did Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt, heck throw in Gwyneth Paltrow even though I’m not so crazy about her. Having a horror movie based on the 7 deadly sins. Why didn’t someone think of it before this movie? It doesn’t matter, the  movie spooked and had one of those shocker endings that films like The Sixth Sense became known for. I’ve always seen this as a companion type movie for Silence Of The Lambs. They both have the same genuine feel. As great as Spacey was here, he wasn’t Hopkins, but that’s not saying much because he was great in his own right.

Does it hold up? – Yes. I’d say it’s less dated than Silence Of The Lambs, but I can’t put my finger on what the precise reason for that is. I mean they were only 4 years apart, but it feels like a bit more than that.

Stars – Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey, Gwyneth Paltrow, R. Lee Ermey

Director – David Fincher

Studio – New Line Cinema

Similar Films – The Silence Of The Lambs

Followed By – No sequel

New Review Movies – 10-23-2010

Hi, I will be making several posts in the next few days to catch up on some of my recent review movies. To make it easier for both you and me I am going to post between 3-5 movies at most unless it is a huge set or something and sets will get a separate post from now on.

MGM

Robocop Trilogy Blu-ray

Robocop – From the director of Total Recall comes a high-adrenalinem “sleek” (Time) sci-fi thriller about a policeman who’s half-man, half-machine. When a good cop (Peter Weller) is murdered by criminals, innovative scientists piece him back together as an unstoppable crime-fighting cyborg called Robocop. Tormented by the memory of his death, he is out for justice – and revenge.

Robocop 2 – Robocop (Peter Weller) returns to battle his toughest opponent yet: his replacement! But not only is the new cyborg’s weaponry more sophisticated than Robocop’s. it contains the brain of a madman! It will take everything Robocop has to save Detroit – and himself – from total destruction.

Robocop 3 – It’s Megacop vs. Megacop in this edge-of-your-seat sci-fi action film. When a ruthless corporation that has a stranglehold on Motor City begins kicking families out of their homes for a new real estate project, Robocop (Robert Burke) and a band of renegades fight to save them in an all-out battle for Detroit.

New Review Movies! 10-20-2010

20th Century Fox
Moulin Rouge (Blu-ray) – Nicole Kidman (The Hours, Australia) sizzles in her Oscar-nominated role as Satine, the seductive courtesan and star of a popular French nightclub that caters to society’s decadent elite. When she unwittingly draws Christian, a struggling writer played by Ewan McGregor (Amelia), into her spell, true love turns to tragedy, Moulin Rouge! Offers a kaleidoscopic ride through a world of song, dance, romance and drama that celebrates truth, beauty, freedom and above all things, love. William Shakespeare’s  Romeo+Juliet (Blu-ray) – Inventive, unconventional, controversial.

William Shakespeare’s Romeo+Juliet, in Luhrmann’s Oscar-nominated adaptation, finds Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers in the modern created world of Verona Beach where Romeo drives a car and Juliet packs a gun. To a thumping soundtrack, and by turns the threat of gunfire through to the delicate embrace of forbidden love, the audience is invited to drink from an intoxicating cinematic cocktail that takes them on a ride from Romeo and Juliet’s budding love, their first kiss, through to their separation and ultimate demise.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Blu-ray) – A divine film adaptation from Richard O’Brien’s British musical horror comedy/rock opera, produced by Lou Adler and Michael White, The Rocky Horror Picture Show features revered performance by Tim Curry (Clue, Home Alone) as a bizarre and self-proclaimed “sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania,” and Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking, Thelma and Louise) and Barry Bostwick (“Spin City”), as Brad and Janet, a couple who find themselves lost on a cold, rainy night. The madcap, musical mayhem begins when the couple takes refuge in the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter as he is about to unveil his greatest creation – and have a bit of fun with his reluctant guests.

#27 – The Blair Witch Project

Click the picture to read my review of The Blair Witch Project @ Movie-Vault.com!

Reason Why – For those who missed out the first time around The Blair Witch Project was a phenomenon. Taking the internet by storm was the is-it-real story of three amateur student filmmakers who investigate the legend of the Blair witch. After interviewing some of the townspeople about the legend the take off into the woods to investigate further. There they find that the woods can be creepy themselves with mysterious happenings, sticks and rocks piling up into haunting formations. The three soon find themselves hopelessly lost and even using a compass the woods seems intent on not allowing them escape.

Does it hold up – Yes and no. Yes, it can still scare given the right moment in viewing it, but it is not the movie it was back when it was new. Time has hurt the film somewhat.

Stars – Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, Michael Williams

Director – Daniel Myrick, Edward Sanchez

Studio – Lionsgate Films

Similar Films – The Woods, Children Of The Corn, Paranormal Activity, Wrong Turn

Followed By – Blair Witch 2: Book Of Shadows

Runner Up – Children Of The Corn

The Return Of The Living Dead Blu-ray Review

The Return Of The Living Dead is a satire of zombie films, particularly Night Of The Living Dead and it’s unofficial sequels. It is a hilarious take that at the same time can spook you in it’s own right. Here the zombies are a little different. They talk! “Brains, I want to eat your brains!” Also they are not easily killed by a gunshot to the head. The movie is filled with 80’s cheesiness, but somehow pulls off horror as well as the much-intended humor. Ultimately it’s a very good zombie flick that you should check out. Just be warned you might die laughing!

#30 – The Amityville Horror

Reasons why – Amityville Horror is another atmosphere movie, this time based on a book that is supposedly a true story, which is creepy in itself. The reality itself that Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered six of his family members while they were sleeping is horrific enough. Whether the haunted house story is true or made-up (which is rumored) is irreverent. Imagine living in a house where six people were killed during their sleep. Just knowing that would creep me out. The addition of a haunted house story with a priests involved in an attempted exorcism, well damn. That’s creepy. A personal memory for me was watching this at a friend’s house and walking home afterward late at night. The music in this movie was spooky and had me very aware of my surroundings and shadows that walk home. James Brolin owned and still owns this part (I like Ryan Reynolds but he‘s no James Brolin who was very convincing in his madness ala Jack Nicholson in The Shining). Sorry to the sequel, but the original is the superior model, though I do like the sequel as well.

Does it hold up? Yes, pretty well. The music is what helps after the visuals fail to scare as they did years ago.

Stars – James Brolin, Margot Kidder, Rod Steiger

Director – Stuart Rosenberg

Studio – MGM

Similar films – The Shining, House On Haunted Hill, The Haunting

Followed By – Amityville II: The Possession, Amityville 3-D, Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes, The Amityville Curse, Amityville: It’s About Time!, Amityville: A New Generation, Amityville Dollhouse, The Amityville Horror 2005

Runner Up – Carrie
