New Review Movie Arrivals – 1-6-2011 – Buried BD & Nite Tales DVD
Hi got a couple of movies to review.
E One Entertainment –
Nite Tales: The Series (DVD) – Five original horror tales, one devilish host. Prepare yourself for a whole new “flavor” of horror! Filled with twists and turns and packed with some of today’s hottest stars, Nite Tales is a thrilling, new anthology series that puts an urban twist on terror – all presented by the ultimate “master of scaremonies,” Flavor Flav – the “Time Keeper.”
Bonus Feature:
- Making Of Featurette
Joe’s Thoughts – Looks interesting with stars like Gary Busey, Tiny Lister and Brigitte Nielsen among others. Not exactly an A list cast, but I’m a horror fan and love anthologies.
Lionsgate –
Buried Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu-ray Disc plus DVD) – Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds) is not ready to die. Beaten and buried in a wooden box by Iraqi insurgents who attacked his civilian convoy, Conroy is left with only a cell phone, a lighter and 90 minutes to save his own life. He has only the voice of his kidnapper to help him piece together clues that could lean an elite team of special agents to his location and time is not on his side. Fighting despair, panic and delirium, Conroy focuses on his only link to the outside world – a cell phone with poor reception and a rapidly draining battery – to keep himself alive for himself and his family back home.
Disc One –
- Blu-ray of Buried
“Unearthing Buried” – making of featurette
Disc Two –
- Standard Definition DVD of the feature film
Joe’s Thoughts – Looks really good. One of the movies I have been looking forward to. Ryan Reynolds is becoming something approaching an A-list star and with upcoming films like Green Lantern his future looks bright……green. OK, that was tacky, but this film looks good and I’ve always been fascinated by the notion of being buried alive. Better seeing it fake on-screen though.

Bitter Feast (DVD) – A food critic can dish it out, but can he take it? Revenge is on the menu for notorious blogger J.T. Franks (Joshua Leonard, Humpday, The Blair Witch Project) when he publishes a rumor which leads to the demise of TV chef Peter Grey’s culinary empire. Grey (James Le Gros, Zodiac, TV’s Mercy) kidnaps the writer, confines him in a remote cabin and presents him with a series of deceptively simple food challenges – from preparing a perfect egg over-easy, to grilling a steak precisely medium-rare – punishing him for anything less then total perfection. Bitter Feast is an exploration of the creative impulse gone tragically and ferociously awry. Indie horror icon Larry Fessenden and renowned chef Mario Batali co-star in the tense shocker, which is served up with wicked wit and savory flair.

Snoopy works as a bell-ringer to raise money and tries making peace with the ferocious cat next door. Linus strives to strike the right tone in his letter to Santa – and his friendship with an indecisive girl at school. Sally’s ideas about gift-giving and the identity of Santa Claus may be unusual – but her strange notion of how to obtain a Christmas tree surprisingly does the job. Lucy tries awfully hard to be nice…and still coax everyone around her to buy her presents. Charlie Brown and Sally wait up for Santa (a surprisingly short man), who spreads Christmas gift cheer further than they had thought. Make merry!

And Soon The Darkness (Blu-ray) – In And Soon The Darkness Stephanie (Amber Heard) and Ellie’s (Odette Yustman) vacation to an exotic village in Argentina is a perfect ‘girl’s getaway’ to bask in the sun, shop and flirt with the handsome locals. After a long night of bar-hopping, the girls get into an argument, and Stephanie heads out alone in the morning to cool off. But when she returns, Ellie has disappeared. Finding signs of a struggle, Stephanie fears the worst, and turns to the police for help. But the local authorities have their hands full already – with a string of unsolved kidnappings targeting young female tourists. Skeptical of the sheriff’s competency, she enlists help from Michael (Karl Urban), an American ex-pat staying at their hotel. Together they go on a frantic search for Ellie, but Stephanie soon realizes that trusting his seemingly good intentions may drag her farther from the truth. With danger mounting, and time running out, Stephanie must find her friend before darkness falls.

New Review Movies -12/8/2010
Hi everyone. Sorry it’s been awhile. I’ve been pretty sick (still am) making it hard to do anything that requires concentration (like typing or writing reviews). Here are some movies that came yesterday and today. There is a lot more that came recently and I will try to catch up on some of those when I can.
20th Century Fox –
The Dolphin Story Of A Dreamer (DVD) – Dive into an enchanting world of undersea adventure, friendship and danger with this delightful animated treasure the whole family will cherish. Daniel Alexander Dolphin is a little dolphin with big dreams, living in a world where dreams are forbidden. Swim along with Daniel and his friends on a magical journey of destiny and discovery as he ventures beyond the safety of his pod and follows his heart into the unknown in search of the true purposes of life. This heartwarming, coming-of-age adventure will make a splash with the young and old alike. Dive in – and dare to dream again!
Joe’s Brief Thoughts – Looks like a good animated or CGI children’s movie. The style is very pleasing to the eye. I wouldn’t be surprised if I end up really liking this.
Vivendi Entertainment –
Derailed (Blu-ray) – Married man Charles Schine (Clive Owen) meets Lucinda Harris (Jennifer Aniston), a high-powered buisnesswoman, on a commuter train one morning. An innocent conversation leads to an evening drink. Before either one can stop, their aroused passions lead to a sizzling one-night stand. Suddenly a stranger explodes into their world, threatening to expose their secret, and lures them into a terrifying game with more surprises than they saw coming.
Special Features – Deleted Scenes, Making of Derailed, Theatrical Trailer
Joe’s Brief Thoughts – I liked this movie. Probably my favorite Clive Owen and favorite Jennifer Aniston (though I loved Along Came Polly & Bruce Almighty) movie wrapped in one. A nice thriller.
Harsh Times (Blu-ray) – From the creator of Training Day comes Harsh Times, an explosive ride on the mean streets of south central Los Angeles, featuring powerhouse performances by Christian Bale (Batman Begins), Freddy Rodriguez (TV’s “Six Feet Under”), and Eva Longoria (TV’s “Desperate Housewives”). Bale is “electrifying” and “mesmerizing” (Entertainment Weekly) as a returning Middle East soldier who, unable to get a job with the LAPD, drifts into a life of petty crime, drugs, and violence. In an acclaimed performance, Bale “continues to establish himself as one of the most daring and committed actors of his generation” (Michael Ordona, Los Angeles Times). Says Kyle Smith of the New York Post, “if Martin Scorsese were 30 and a Los Angeleno, he’d be making movies…like this.”
Special Features – Feature Commentary with Writer/Producer/Director David Ayer, Making of Harsh Times, Deleted Scenes
Joe’s Brief Thoughts – Harsh Times was a good movie. Probably Eva Longoria’s best big-screen film thus far. Nice cast and an interesting story. Along with Derailed a really nice release from Vivendi on Blu-ray.
Warner Brothers/New Line Cinema –
Rush Hour (Blu-ray) – “Ain’t never gonna have no partner.” LAPD Det. James Carter insists. He gets a partner. And since that partner is played by dynamic martial arts legend Jackie Chan and motor-mouthed Carter is played by wisecracking Chris Tucker, Rush Hour zooms along with gleeful chemistry under the dynamic directorial hand of Brett Ratner. The case: rescue the kidnapped daughter of a visiting Hong Kong official. The result: amazing stunts (Chan does his own( and verbal wit (well, Tucker does his own, too!) that delivered a kick to the buddy-cop genre – and gave Chan his long-awaited, mainstream-U.S. breakthrough.
Special Features – Commentary by Director Brett Ratner, Additional Scenes, A Piece of the Action: Behind the Scenes of Rush Hour Featurette Gallery, Brett Ratner’s Short Film Whatever Happened to Mason Reese?, 2 Music Videos: Dru Hill’s How Deep Is Your Love? and Heavy D & the Boyz’s Nuttin’ but Love, Isolated Score with Commentary by Composer Lalo Schifrin, Theatrical Trailer.
Joe’s Brief Thoughts – Rush Hour is one of the best action-comedies to come along since the heydey of 48 Hrs and Beverly Hills Cop movies in the 1980’s. Jackie Chan brings the action and Chris Tucker brings the comedy, though Chan is pretty good in his own right comedy-wise. Everything works here, action, comedy, music, pace and style all work. Nice casting as well with great supporting actors like the late Chris Penn. You have to own this on Blu-ray!

Wall Street Insider Trading Edition DVD
On December 21st (2010) 20th Century Fox will be releasing Wall Street 2 Money Never Sleeps on BD and DVD so I thought since I got the email notification from them about this that it would be the perfect time to do my quick write-up on the original. Back in 1987 we had gone through some troubling times with Wall Street (sound familiar?) – greedy executives ripping off the little man for their own personal wealth while everyone else had to struggle in the wake. 2010 and we are pretty much in the same situation. This film is the perfect representation of the “Me” generation filled with yuppies who did drugs like cocaine, beautiful women and greed. Michael Douglas was perfect for the role of Gordon Gecko and it will be nice to see him in the sequel (haven’t seen it yet so don’t spoil it for me!). The film starred a bunch of other big-name Hollywood actors from Charlie Sheen and his father Martin Sheen to Daryl Hannah, Hal Holbrook, James Spader and others. Michael Douglas won an Best Actor Oscar for the movie and role that made him an infamous villain in this great Oliver Stone film. Check it out! Looking forward to seeing him in the sequel!

My Interview With Sexy Actress/Singer America Olivo!
JH – Circle is like an Independent version of a film like Seven, did you get that feel or was it just me?
AO – Is it because I remind you of Gwyneth Paltrow? Awe… Shucks 😉 Actually, I do get what you mean. Not in the film’s specifics, nor plot, but in that it investigates the mind of a thrilling serial killer. Most people are fascinated by the minds and motivations behind the people who commit such horrid acts. Diving into the guts of these types is what makes these two films both equally thrilling and horrific.
JH – What are some of your favorite films?
AO – Excluding any films me my husband and I have been in… I can’t name them all, there are many, but here are some off the top of my head : Empire of the Sun, The Royal Tannenbaums, Little Miss Sunshine, Food Inc, Avatar, South Park, Ghostbusters, Sense and Sensibility, A Clockwork Orange, The Shawshank Redemption, Big, The Green Mile
JH – Your film credits show some very recognizable films like the remake of Friday the 13th, Iron Man, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen along with films like Bitch Slap, Neighbor and Circle. What are some of your favorite roles to date?
AO – Well, I love them all for different reasons. I loved working with Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow in Iron Man. I loved becoming a part of the Friday the 13th family. I loved getting to play a Kubrick style killer in Neighbor. It was great fun to be in a tiny part of a summer blockbuster like Transformers 2 and getting to be on set to watch how such amazing effects are developed in a film so grand. In circle, I loved being a bit of the comic relief in a thriller/horror. I think my role in Bitch Slap was my favorite for the reason that I got to do things with that character that are only usually reserved for men in films. I love being over the top, and there was no ceiling on what happens in Bitch Slap land!
JH – Bitch Slap looks like an amazingly fun Grindhouse-style film, was it as fun to shoot as it looks?
AO – Bitch Slap is fun now, but was such hard work, we didn’t have much time for fun while filming. Most of the fun we had was enjoying promoting the film and hearing the reaction from Bitch Slapping fans 😉
JH – What’s your favorite scary movie? (Sorry can’t help it. I’m a big Scream fan!)
AO – Audrey Rose.
JH – Speaking of Scream – Neve Campbell, what’s she like and how are you sisters-in-law getting along?
AO – She’s amazing! She’s one of the most beautiful, generous, open hearted, and talented people I know.
JH – Do you know if she was happy doing Scream 4 and if she had any interesting stories?
AO – Ha ha! I haven’t heard any anecdotes from her yet as she’s busy and traveling. All I know is that my husband went out to Michigan and spent time with the cast at some point and couldn’t have had a nicer time and said nicer things about everyone he met there. Sounds like a great group of people. I’m looking forward to seeing it!

New Review Movies! – 11/3/2010 Part 1
Here are a couple new movies to review. I’m going to try to catch up on some other recent arrivals in the next couple days –
I Am (DVD) – The Ten Commandments, as you’ve never seen them before, provide the framework for this compelling drama set in the City of Angels. A desperate heiress. A beautiful reporter. A vengeful detective. A charismatic district attorney. In modern-day Los Angeles, all of their lives will intersect, leading to profound choices that will test each character’s morality and faith. With guidance from a mysterious stranger, these lost souls search for answers, only to discover that the path to salvation is closer than they ever could have imagined.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Blu-ray) – Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls – start your engines. You’re about to take an incredible ride with one of the most wonderful family films of all time! With it’s clever tunes (including the Oscar -Nominated* title song), marvelous cast and enchanting storyline, this delightful romp is lots of fun and simply “toot sweet” to pass up! Dick Van Dyke stars as eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts, who creates an extraordinary car called Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It not only drives – but also flies and floats – as it leads him, his two children and his beautiful lady friend, Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes), into a magical world of pirates, castles and endless adventure.
* – 1968, Original Song
